15 Years in 15 Moments: The Ultimate Guard Story

Ultimate Guard is celebrating its 15th anniversary! To mark our birthday, we're looking back at 15 exciting, wild, wonderful years – captured in 15 defining moments.

2011 | It All Started with a Box

A box of Star Wars trading cards, to be precise. That's what set everything in motion back in 1996, when three teenagers named Ulrich, Christoph, and Marcel, in a small village in southwestern Germany, decided to turn their passion for gaming and collecting into a business. What began as a bedroom-scale venture became heo, today one of the world's largest distributors of pop culture merchandise. And in 2011, Ultimate Guard was born out of heo. The three heo founders had long dreamed of launching their own TCG accessories brand. With Ultimate Guard, they set out not only to close the gap for high-quality products on the market, but also to bring order to the ever-growing chaos of their own card collections...

2014 | An Exotastic New World

The concept paid off: quality paired with innovation and modularity quickly made Ultimate Guard one of the most beloved brands among TCG players. Our worldwide breakthrough came in 2014 with the Flip'n'Tray. This deck box wasn't just incredibly practical thanks to its removable accessory compartment, it was also made from a material that stood out from everything on the market at the time – and quickly became Ultimate Guard's signature: the exotastic Xenoskin! That same premium and elegant material was used shortly after for the Smarthive as well, which also quickly rose to popularity thanks to its fully removable lid (which was usable as a playmat!) and our own specially developed ZnapClaw mechanism for extra-secure closure.

2016 | Small Box, Big Impact

Speaking of signature products: two years later, Ultimate Guard released another deck box that might have seemed unassuming at first glance, yet became so massively popular that it's still part of our core lineup today. The Boulder turned into an absolute evergreen in the industry, selling millions of units over the years. Even back then, it left other, similarly simple storage solutions far behind in terms of practicality, stability, and robustness (not to mention feel, thanks to its signature soft-touch surface!). With modularity in mind, the Boulder was deliberately kept minimalist and as compact as possible, so it could be combined with every Xenoskin product in our lineup. It might look like a simple product, but manufacturing it is anything but. That didn't stop us from massively expanding our Boulder range over the past ten years, though: today, the often-copied, never-matched deck box comes in Clear, Solid, mixed variants, and a sustainable version, and this definitely won't be the last chapter in the Boulder story!

2017 | Pro Gaming

For the Magic: The Gathering 2017/18 season, Ultimate Guard dipped its toes into pro gaming and sponsorships for the first time. The newly founded Ultimate Guard Pro Team, led by Magic: The Gathering legends Jon Finkel and Huey Jensen, wasn't just equipped with custom products for every member. The team won the Magic Team Series right out of the gate in 2018! Two years later, the Ultimate Guard Pro Team became Team CFBUltimateGuard (and later, Team TCGplayer), and pros and Hall of Famers like Luis Scott-Vargas, Reid Duke, Martin Juza, and Seth Manfield remain part of the Ultimate Guard family to this day. It laid the foundation for the sponsorships we're still active in today, through which we've had the chance to work with some of the biggest names in TCG content creation.

2018 | Protect Your Cards Like a Samurai

In the fall of 2018, we attended SPIEL Essen (the world's largest trade fair for board and tabletop games) to unveil a product that would launch our company into a whole new sphere: Katana Sleeves. After years of research, comparison testing, and scientific analysis of materials and manufacturing, Ultimate Guard could rightfully claim these new sleeves were the best on the market, crafted with Japanese precision manufacturing and unmatched in durability, shuffle feel, and clarity. After hitting the mass market in 2019, Katana Sleeves quickly became synonymous with top-tier sleeve quality, and an absolute fan favorite among pros and hobbyists alike.

2018 | Entering the World of Lifestyle

Around the same time, Ultimate Guard broke new ground with a very different kind of product. Just like Katana Sleeves, the Ammonite Anti-Theft Backpack was the result of a meticulous, extremely long development process, during which every material, shape, texture, and feature was put to the test. The result was Ultimate Guard's first lifestyle product, perfectly tailored to our TCG accessories, yet just as useful off the gaming table. The backpack's popularity, including a special-edition colorway, spoke for itself, and in 2021 it got a successor: the Vago 28 Backpack. Today, the lifestyle category is a firm part of our lineup (just take a look at the faux-fur Squaroes sneakers!).

2019 | The Start of Something Magical

Making products for games like Magic: The Gathering is one thing, making products for Magic: The Gathering itself is a different challenge entirely! In 2019, we got our first opportunity to work directly with Wizards of the Coast, thanks to a fantastic team effort from many people who still work at the company today. Once the deal was signed, the Ultimate Guard team celebrated in style – with a wine tour through the local vineyards. The collaboration resulted in the Planeswalker Line: A Smarthive, a Sidewinder, a playmat, printed sleeves and a life counter, all in a sleek black and blue design featuring the Planeswalker logo. What nobody could have guessed back then was that five years later, we'd sign another deal with Wizards, this time becoming an official global licensing partner, with hundreds of licensed product releases every year!

2020 | From Home Office Straight to the Customer

The Covid pandemic turned the world upside down, and Ultimate Guard was no exception. During this time, our team was forced to work from home on a massive project: giving Ultimate Guard its own webshop for end customers. Until then, Ultimate Guard had only sold through its parent company, heo, and through retailers. Now, for the first time, customers could order directly from the source. Despite the pandemic and short-time work, our still fairly small team got to work and built our European B2C webshop from the ground up – the same one you can still find on our website today!

2021 | Moving to the New Campus

As Ultimate Guard and heo kept growing, it was soon time for a new shared home – and what a home it turned out to be! The newly built heo Campus, in the works since the mid-2010s (and still located in the very same small village along the Wine Route where it all began back in 1996!), is a showcase industrial complex set amid some of Germany's most beautiful landscapes. The buildings were designed with sustainability in mind and run entirely on green electricity from our own solar installations, while the grounds feature orchard meadows and wildflower fields designed to be close to nature and wildlife-friendly. And Ultimate Guard? Got a brand-new, modern home with a green heart, a workplace the team is proud of and one we began opening up to the outside world through events like the Ultimate Guard Content Creator Charity Cup.

2021 | Return to Earth

You may have noticed by now: sustainability and environmental responsibility matter enormously to us. They were also topics that got little attention in the TCG accessories market – until 2021! With the Return to Earth Boulder, we launched the first sustainable deck box on the market, made from 97% sustainable materials, specifically a byproduct of paper production sourced from the Bavarian Forest and the Black Forest (right around the corner from where our headquarter is). But that's just the tip of the sustainable iceberg: the RTE Boulder marked the beginning of the local deck box production at our own manufacturing facility in the neighboring village, which soon expanded to include the Boulder Solid and printed Boulder, as well as Squaroes (more on that later). A few years later, the Sidewinder line went sustainable for the first time too, with the Coral Places series made from 52% recycled materials. And this is certainly not where it ends...

2023 | On the Road

As our team grew rapidly, 2023 opened the door to entirely new areas for us, one of them being TCG events. While Ultimate Guard had occasionally shown up at events like SPIEL in previous years, MagicCon Barcelona 2023 marked the true starting point of our event presence. Dedicated Ultimate Guard shops, meet-and-greets (and beats) with and against our sponsored players and influencers, giveaways, laser engraving on deck boxes, livestreaming, and of course exclusive products – all set up at increasingly bigger and bolder booths. By 2026, our event calendar includes a total of 17 events across seven countries on four continents! We're also proud to be the title sponsor of the European Magic Series and several other tournament series and events, always showing up wherever the action is.

2023 | Made in the USA

Short supply chains aren't just better for the environment, they also make logistics a whole lot easier. That's why, alongside our production facilities in Germany, we're always on the lookout for local manufacturing opportunities. And soon enough, another milestone followed: the first Boulder made in the USA. Starting in 2023, our popular Boulder Solid began being manufactured in Chicago, Illinois, sending several hundred thousand deck boxes directly into the American market. The very first Ultimate Guard products ever made in the USA! And the Boulder Solid definitely won't be the last product to go down this road; we've got more plans in this direction, though for now, they remain a secret...

2024 | The Edgy Side of Pop Culture

Trading card games are booming, and players are deeply immersed in pop culture (much like we are, by the way) – so why not bring the two together? Under the motto "The Edgy Side of Pop Culture," we launched our deck box sub-brand, Squaroes, in 2024. These licensed deck boxes were designed to represent the next generation of TCG accessories: printed with exclusive artwork from the biggest IPs in pop culture, available in different rarities, and strictly limited through one-time print runs. With Squaroes, deck boxes became collectibles in their own right! Zooming out, Squaroes is part of a bigger shift at Ultimate Guard. For a long time, sleek, single-colored products were our main focus. Today, printed deck boxes, playmats, and more are our new normal. Players increasingly want more emotion, personalization, and self-expression, and that's exactly what we aim to deliver.

2025 | The Next Sleeve Milestone

It took another long stretch of testing and development before printed sleeves went from occasional releases (like the Lands Edition back in our early years) to a permanent part of our lineup. When you hold Ultimate Guard sleeves in your hands, they shouldn't just look great – they should also deliver the quality you've come to expect from us! In the winter of 2025, the moment finally arrived: to celebrate the Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender set, we released our very first Ultimate Guard Art Sleeves. The five designs, including Appa and Momo, became instant bestsellers, and Art Sleeves have been a fixture in our lineup ever since, whether for Magic releases, other licensed products, or entirely original designs of our own.

2026 | Music to Our Ears

At MagicCon: Atlanta in late 2025, we launched an experiment that would quickly become our biggest initiative outside our core business so far: Ultimate Guard Sound Waves brings together Magic and music in a way that had never been done before. How does it work, you ask? We produce exclusive, strictly limited TCG accessories in collaboration with bands that have at least one active Magic player among their members (including heavyweights like Bastille, Electric Callboy, or I Prevail), and bring both the artists and products directly to you, both at Magic events and major music festivals like Rock im Park. During MagicCon Atlanta, we even hosted our first metal concert with metalcore legends Atreyu! The feedback was so overwhelming that we're even more excited to soon share what (and who) we've got coming next...
